Contingency Analysis What is it? The Contingency Analysis page allows users to define contingencies that represent N-1 situations, so they can be monitored with regard to capacity. This allows the user to manage N-1 situations and analyze the historical capacity of coupled systems using Dynamic Line Rating.The contingency analysis is available as part of the Grid Monitoring page. How to use The grid monitoring page is primarily designed for and used by system operators. It works well as a passive monitoring screen at the center of operations.Users can define network scenarios that represent different network topologiesEach scenario contains a list of contingencies that represent different potential N-1 situationsEach contingency describes an N-1 situation and provides data on capacity in real-time and forecasts up to 4 hours ahead.Contingencies can also be used to analyze the historical trends and evaluate the potential of DLR for alleviating re-dispatching or disconnection measures. ContentsAll the page-components and buttons with their interactions are explained below Options Bar Refresh - refreshes the data on the page (this also happens for every interaction)Confidence Level - selects the confidence level applied to the forecast Select Scenario - allows the user to switch between network scenariosToggle (%/A) - switches between showing data as Amperes or percentage, showing current as a % of DLR.Define New Contingency - creates another contingency Network Scenarios Use the Network Scenario drop down menu to select the relevant network scenario. Each network scenario contains a list of contingencies representing different grid configurations. See "Creating Network Scenarios" for more information. Contingency ListThe contingency list is a table with the different contingencies for a given network scenario.Contingency Name - the name of the situation, typically the name of the line that goes out of serviceAffected System - describes how many % of the load from the contingency line will get switched to the line that stays operational. Expected Load - the sum total of the load from the contingency line and the operational line. Realtime Capacity - the real-time DLR value for the operational lineDLR Forecasts - the forecasted DLR values for the operational lines ContingencyContingencies can be opened to display historical data on the total load and DLR values for the contingency situation. It is simple to navigate in time and to export the data for further analysis. This can be useful to evaluate the potential for DLR to manage N-1 situations and for operational planning purposes. Creating Network ScenariosIn the options bar, select the Network Scenarios button and Define new network scenario to open the sidebar where you can create a new network scenario. Define Name and Default ScenarioCreate the description for each scenario by entering the name and description for the network scenario. Scenarios represent different switching layouts that are typical - e.g winter and summer layouts.Each grid owner can only have one default scenario, so make sure you select the one that represents the default/normal network topology. Creating ContingenciesCreate new contingencies by pressing the Define New Contingency button in the options bar. This opens up the side-bar with the following input fieldsContingency Name - the name of the contingency. Free-text field that typically includes the name of the contingency line. Operational Line - the line that stays operational during the contingency eventContingency Line - the line which falls out of operation during the contingency event Model Selection - which DLR model should be applied to the contingency. Contingency analysis is only available using sensor-based DLR with or without limiting components applied (Transmission Chain Rating).Load Distribution - the distribution of the load from the contingency line to the operational line. If lines are operated in tandem, this would typically be 100 %. NB! Make sure you are in the correct network scenario when creating new contingencies Defining ContingenciesEnter the data for each field and validate your input before saving. It is also possible to enter multiple operational lines for one contingency, if 3 or more lines are operational at the same time. Simply use the Add new line to contingency button to add a new line. This allows you to more accurately define how the load is distributed between the operational lines. For the case on the left, we could for instance imagine a situation where another line, Saffron - Lusus, will receive some of the load resulting from the situation. This will then be reflected in the final contingency list. Currently there is support for contingency situations containing one contingency line and up to two operational lines.
